hi all,
i've downloaded (and installed) softice v4.05NT. when i try to start it under XP it doesn't do anything (somehow the ntice service isn't created), although i also copied the .sys files from the XP patch to the windows\system32\drivers directory.
then i decided to install it on my win2k system. well this seems to work, when i press <ctrl>+D softice pops up. but when i set a breakpoint to getlocaltime like this: bpx getlocaltime
and i then fire up the system clock, or some other program that calls this function, softice won't pop up. also when i then manually let it pop up using the <ctrl>+D command and i press F12 to step the window disappears right away!
i've written several softice tutorials and command references, i've also changed the settings as it was suggested by one of those tutorials, but that doesn't help.
so i'm pretty stuck now!
i hope someone can tell me what i have done wrong, since i really want to continue using the book i recently bought "hacker disassembling uncovered" since i want to learn how to crack my own programs in order to create a more secure program myself and i'm also very interested in Reverse Engineering, and almost every tutorial/book about these subjects use Softice.
i also have a copy of ollydbg, w32dasm and pe explorer, but it still isn't the same as Sice.
thanks in advance,
Scorpius

yes, me too... i got it to work in 2k but not as it suppose to although i have found some other things to try for XP, just google for softice and XP, and you'll find a lot of links on changing winice.dat or copying some other dat file... but even if i got it to work on XP, it will then do the same as on 2k i guess, and that still isn't as it suppose to be ...

crackits are at my site, and the biggest link i can give you about ASM: www.freeprogrammingresources.com also the book "Hacker disassembling uncovered" is very useful haven't found a solution yet, so now i'm trying out PE explorer, perhaps this is a nice substitution for Sice.

OK, Softice Will NOT run on windowsXP NATURALLY! There is a problem with the coding or somehting. Anyways, there is a patch for it that I have lying around somewhere that I will post a link to here in a little while when I find it again. But that is the answer to getting it to work on WindowsXp. OK here is something else you will want to know. It has to deal with Softice Runing on WindowsXP SP1. You need to read this page, and follow the instructions too: CODE hxxp://frontline.compuware.com/nashua/kb/doc/1348.asp Here is where you can get the patch for XP for Softice 4.05 CODE hxxp://picasso.poupe.net/download.php?id=147&c=dbg Enjoy! L_S well, it doesn't work i've copied the driver files to the c:\windows\system32\drivers\ directory, i also copied the osinfo.dat file to the same directory, i've installed Sice 4.05NT, but when i try to start it, it still hasn't made a service, meaning the batch file to start sice to run "net start ntice"doesn't work, since the ntice service isn't recognized. i know, it's too late to answer, but I had a similar problem. The solution is to put a "w" at the end. for example: "bpx getlocaltimew" or "bpx messageboxw". I don't know why, but it worked by me, when testing softice with WinXP, which I could run in 640x480 and 16 colors, not beyond.
