Why is UNIX considerd a good OS???
Is it compatible with alot of things? Does it draw very little RAM? Are there almost no virussen for it? Is it easy to use? Do you don't need an up-to-date very good computer for it?
Those may be some things about it but i just want to know?

It's easy once you get used to it and then it's very easy to go from one UNIX to another..

And i dont see M$ everywhere And i get to use the command line better And it gives me a MUCH higher feeling of control, nothing M$ products could get near And it can run the hardened kernel, M$ havent even released anything similar And it can handle RAW Packets a hell of alot easier
Those are a few of the reasons I use linux... Also, open source really is a community, even if its free.. And during the course you start reading some german guys notes on bagging some russian guy for writing such unstructured work, everyday theres something new.
Did you know almost any linux system with samba installed can fool your Windows machines into thinking its a Primary Domain Controller / WINS Server and more... Windows XP can do all of this, but Mr Gates has decided that if its even remotely for server use, XP shouldnt have it, i like servers.

QUOTE(GekAapie @ Jun 29 2005, 08:24 PM) freebsd is a nice one to start on http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1...irrors-ftp.htmlbut... "If you don't know what you need Windows NT for, you don't need it." sorry to quote from bill gates in a UNIX discussion but you get the idea.

@GekAapie: www.distrowatch.org
Read through atleast the top 10 list, then choose one that suits you, keep in mind, you can always try another for free... But thats the site which taught me about linux's variants

SuSE and REDHAT are *remarkably* easy to install. almost no knowledge of operating systems is required. I am sure other distros are just as easy but I am not familiar with them...

@realloader: i never had problem with it... found all hardware... and im working with linux just a few time... never had problem on notebook, personal computers and servers... okay... may at the installation you're faster.... (realy faster than gentoo, may faster as debian) ... but in the end you will be faster with linux cause 1. you never will have problems, 2. i've you've got a problem you will fix it easier then with windows (eg gentoo livecd!)
cheers

I started my teeth on a Knoppix CD booter. And I'm still hungry. I just don't have the time to feed myself as often as I'd like. Aside from all the other reasons, *nix will expand your horizons and challenge you to explore. The world isn't all windows; there's also "doors" everywhere. When I say this topic, I feared a flamer. Thanks for disappointing me!

The advantages of *nix are huge, especially for security but to really appreciate them you need dedicate time to learning it. When i say dedicate time to learning it, I mean using it as your primary OS. It isn't as friendly as windows, it can be a total pain in the ass, but it is getting easier. In the Redhat 6.0 era when I started, hardware support was s**t but since then the improvement has been dramatic. Now most people can do an install and get all there hardware detected correctly without having to do any config. The advantage, in security research terms are that you can go down to as low a level as you want, as the OS gives you access to all the operations you need to do (especially networking operations). When people discover security flaws, they want to write programs that demonstrate them. One thing they don't want to waste time on is writing pretty interfaces like almost every windows program has. it is a waste of time, functionality is what is important. These attributes, low level functionality mixed with the low development time mean that pretty much all exploit code is written in *nix. Apart from that, the advantages mean that all the best security tools are written in *nix, e.g. Nmap. To see the power of *nix, in relation to security research (which is what I assume you are interested in) you can try it without worrying about your hard drive. I suggest WHAX (http://iwhax.net). It is Live CD distro which has lots of security tools included. Am still a newbie here, anyone correct me if I'm wrong! Rj
