If I remember right, most of those are from around Area 51? They're probably used for bomber target alignment for pilots, the craters were probably the result of LIVE vs. DUMMY munitions being used. They use it for when the space shuttle comes down to earth. They also use it for pilot alignment. If I remember I'll get a google map link for it, really AMAZINGLY cool pictures.
