go with nMap (Network Mapper) - this is my personal favorite... you can find nmap at www.nmap.org
| QUOTE | Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) they are offering, what operating system (and OS version) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers and both console and graphical versions are available. Nmap is free software, available with full source code under the terms of the GNU GPL. |

From my point of view nmap it is the very best. Check the new options of nmap 3.46 ( decoy and proxy scanning + all others options ) and you'll see why soon enought the nmap will take the place of fping, firewallk and many others. There are very much tut's about nmap so I do not want to write another..so check this, maybe will help you in some way .. HeRe

If you're worried about your machine, I reccomend ShieldsUp (I believe at www.grc.com) check google. Anyway, if you want for remote machines, I've tried them all, and in my opinion, Superscan 3.0 (I didn't really like 4.0) is the best.

The thing about Retina is that it sucks in comparison to Nessus... furthermore, it is noisy as hell.

Its not that Retina sucks; it's a fine tool, actually. It's just that Nessus does much, much more (he said "in comparison").

Feb 12 2004, 07:20 AM
And what about all the Audits? Does Nessus have them too? Maybe u have a list with the features of both programs?

Nessus is the best once you get it installed, but for Windows only then get Retina or Languard.

Fast port scanning is not allways a good idea. To remain stealth is most important item one should care about. Fast Port Scaning will cause IDS wake up surely. So I prefer nmap as the king of port scanners with those golden for both Windows & Linux. It's command line so you may easily use it remotely via telnet or even a web based shell script (asp, php). Nessus/NewT, xscan and Retina are good tools for vulnerability Scan and don't forget nessus (and now xscan) utilized with nmap. But Langaurd, No...! never many false positives Nstealth is a more web cgi scanner rather than a port scanner.
