Verizon wireless is true that still trying to do everything it can to try and meet the success that AT&T has received by releasing the iPhone. Unfortunately with the recently released results of the Blackberry storm Verizon still needs to continue its push by offering new touchscreen phones. The Samsung Omnia is the next touchscreen phone to be offered by Verizon wireless to its customers in the hopes of keeping some of the younger subscribers from going over to AT&T. The Samsung Omnia isn't the first touchscreen offered by Samsung was already released a number of touch screen devices such as the Behold.
Now one thing to mention is the fact that no matter what Samsung dresses the phones up as each one of these phones still have the same touchscreen technology powering them. And that is pretty much the downfall of a lot of these devices. Sure the base price may be a lot less than buying an iPhone can you may also save yourself the trouble of transferring your account to another wireless provider, but the Samsung Omnia not be your answer to an iPhone on the Verizon wireless network. What it may lack in technological miracles it does make up for in some basic features as well as nice styling. The Samsung Omnia sports a 3.2 inch touchscreen which is truly similar in size to the iPhone and gives you plenty of room to the webpages and also videos. The resolution is pretty decent as well see will be squinting at blurry images while trying to use your phone. That is obviously a major pet peeve of mine. One pretty nice feature that I can really get behind the fact that the phone natively has a Divx certification that means it supports H263 and H264 video right out-of-the-box.
One thing that you can write about all of your iPhone friends is the fact that the Samsung Omnia offers a five megapixel camera with face detection and geo-tagging options. Obviously the high amount of megapixels allows you to take some pretty clear photos. One thing that you may not be familiar with is the option to geo-tag your photos. Geo-tagging your photos inserts GPS coordinates of where you actually took the photo so that you can use that you tagging features on sites such as Flickr to show on a map where each one of your photos was taken. A great feature provided on the Samsung Omnia that makes taking vacation pictures a lot of fun.
Obviously since you are geo tagging your photos the phone does support GPS. GPS functions of the phone tied directly to the turn by turn instructions that are offered by Verizon wireless. The phone itself does not have a native turn by turn directions software installed. A bit of a bummer but commonplace for all of your Verizon wireless products and the Samsung Omnia is no exception.
The phone does support wi-fi connections so if you're looking for faster speed when you're in a location where the Verizon wireless data connection is not available you can connect to the Internet and use the phone as a web browser. One problem that I noticed is if you're at a hotspot that requires you to sign in via a webpage the Samsung Omnia has difficulty in accepting any cookies that are needed to provide you with access to the wi-fi hotspot.
Another plus that could make other cell phone users envious is the fact that the Samsung Omnia also has a built-in FM radio. So if you have one of those favorite morning shows that you can not pass up you can use the Samsung Omnia as a radio receiver while you're commuting. For some people that's going to be a make or break feature.
