OQO Review 2 Months Later |
|
|
|
Ok here we are two months later with the OQO and the honey moon is over. I have put this thing to work and here is how it held up.
Like anyone I am a gadget guy. I am always looking for the next best thing to make my day more more productive. So like anyone I get some of the latest toys and usually I love them when I first get them and then the glitz and usage begins to slowly fade.
As for the OQO my usage has not wained. I have to admit the device has replaced my laptop, IPod, AV500 media player. The OQO is wonderful, it gets the job done and the keys are wonderful. So here are some features I will highlight.
Double Capacity Battery
The battery is fantastic, a true 5 hours of work including wireless usage with the screen brightness turned down to 1. Even with the screen brightness turned to 1 it is still quite usable. If you turn it all the way up you cut the time down to 3.5 hours. Still plenty good for a ripped DVD.
Stand Alone Battery Charger
This is a necessary and ingenious accessorie needed for any road warrior. The charger is just a small adapter about the size of a quarter that allows you to directly charge the battery from the charger without the oqo. I use it constantly to charge my secondary batter.
Bluetooth Keyboard
The bluetooth keyboard that comes with the Road Warrior accessories pack is a Think outside model. It is a fantastic keyboard wonderful size and tactile feedback. The only problem I have is when using the stand while the oqo is hooked to the charger, it won't stay on the stand, which is a bit disappointingly, but not a deal breaker. Pairing the device to the OQO using the OQO bluetooth manager is extremely easy to use.
By the way the mouse that is included within the Road Warrior Pack is a nice mouse but the fact that it is USB and the connectors for USB are in the bottom of the OQO makes propering it up on an angle extremely annoying. Invest some extra cash and get a bluetooth mouse it will make the experience much more enjoyable.
Stylus and Tablet Feature
First thing I did was go out and get another Wacom stylus. The one they give you is cheap and it feels that way. On most occasions I don't really use thy stylus, I thought I was going to but the keyboard and "nub" pointer combo just works to well. :-)
Scratches
I have some, none on the screen though, just on the plastic side of the device and some paint chipped off the battery. Just so you know the test for durability on this device was as follows. I had the oqo in no case inside the saddle bag of my motorcycle. One of the ties on the saddle bag came loose so the oqo was bouncing around the saddle bag as the bag flapped in the wind as I drove down the Turnpike at 80 mph for 60 minutes. So it got a few scratches but I doubt most devices could handle that. ( I wouldn't recommend it though :-)
Its a great device well designed and one of the first UMPC's to become an actual usable product.
