The Yoggie Personnel
Gatekeeper, is a handheld Linux firewall
that attaches to the computer via two Ethernet ports. Acting as a hardware
based firewall that then protects the machine from all network based threats.
Computer users on
the road cause some of the highest levels of stress for any IT or security professional. The task alone of
maintaining patches in today's mobile work force can be staggering.
One company, Yoggie
has attempted to reduce this threat by creating what is a in its most basic
form a hand held IPS and firewall
product. Though the idea is simple the implementation most obviously was not as
the shear size of the device is impressively
small. The Yoggie allows a user to protect his PC with a operating
system independent security device that fits in the palm of the hand.
The pro's to this
device are that you get the added
security without the overhead of software running on the laptop itself. Freeing up many resources to be used for the
productivity and remote applications that need to be used on the machine.
Yet the pro's are
slightly overcast as the device does have some short points as it only protects
against a wired LAN based series of attacks. Currently the majority of my users
are using wireless and WWAN on the road. In this case such a product may be in
effective.
One more issue with
the device is that it is a device. I currently have executives who cannot stop losing their Blackberries and RSA
keyfobs, let alone another device for them
to carry.
Win or lose you may
want to give the device a try at http://www.yoggie.com/
