Need to hide a file? Someone monitoring your internet traffic? Wanna wanna impress your friends? Wanna play secret spy games? Wanna learn a powerful tool of business? --Then Steganography is the trade for you. The Definition of Steganography by www.dictionary.com is : Hiding a secret message within a larger one in such
a way that others can not discern the presence or contents of
the hidden message. For example, a message might be hidden
within an image by changing the least significant bits to
be the message bits. This article will show you how to hide lets say a word document inside a .gif image. To complete the activity shown in this article you will have to download S-tools or Steganography Tools which is a program that allows you to construct and deconstruct Stego Files. S-tools can be downloaded from: http://www.jjtc.com/Security/stegtools.htm
How To Hide A Document in a .GIF File: 1. Open S-Tools.exe 2. You Should See Something Like This: 
3. Now This is Weird Thing about this program: You drag the .gif image you want to hide the document in into the program itself. So if you have a image in My Pictures drag it into The S-Tools large grey open space. This is an example on how the screen should look like:  4. Now we will hide the actual document inside the picture. Notice that the document can only be about 96k bytes large to actually fit inside the picture as shown in the lower right hand corner. Now to hide the document ( a word document in my case ) again drag the actual document into S-Tools, but this time drag the file into the picture as if you were placing the file inside the picture. If done correctly you should get a picture that looks like this:  5. Now at this window type in a secret passphrase that only you and the people you want to be able to access your document can know. Keep the IDEA encryption algorithm default and press OK. If a menu comes up asking if you want to attempt color reduction or 24 bit image choose the 24 bit image. VOila! You now should have something that looks like this: Notice that the images look almost exactly the same :)
 Right Click the new image and choose "Save As" to save your new image with a document hidden inside of it! You can now give this to your contacts over the internet, and they can use the secret passcode to reveal the hidden document in a seemingly harmless image :). How To Reveal The Document hidden in the .Gif File: To Reveal the document hidden in a .gif, right click the image, select reveal, type in the passcode and press OK. If done correctly your screen should look like the image at the bottom, with the newly revealed document savable by right clicking it and choosing save as. 
Conclusion: As you can see Steganography is a very powerful tool to hide information with, and its not restricted to .gif files only! Stego can hide information in almost any file format.
